Job search 101: Summer jobs for students – Know your options

With the summer months quickly approaching, students everywhere are looking for ways to make money, gain experience, and build their resumes. Finding a job during the summer can be difficult, but with some research and effort, you can find the perfect position that fits your needs. Let's look at some of the different types of jobs available to students and tips on when and how to apply for these opportunities.

Summer jobs for students with experience

If you have previous work or volunteer experience, you may have an easier time finding a summer job. Depending on the industry you're interested in, entry-level positions typically only require a little prior work experience. In addition, you may qualify for an internship or apprenticeship position if you demonstrate aptitude in your chosen field. Be sure to highlight any skills and experiences relevant to the job you want so that employers know why they should hire you over someone else.

Summer jobs for students without experience

Even if you still need to gain work experience, there are plenty of opportunities for students to make money during the summer. For example, many retail stores hire seasonal workers throughout the year, especially around holidays like Thanks Giving and Christmas. Other popular options include:

  1. Working as a beach attendant or lifeguard for your local city or town pool.
  2. Working in food services such as restaurants or catering companies.
  3. Becoming a camp counsellor at a local day camp or overnight camp facility.
  4. Even babysitting part-time.

When and how to apply for summer jobs

The best time to start applying is now! While some businesses may wait two months before Summer before they begin hiring seasonal staff members, many start taking applications multiple months in advance. Getting your resume submitted as soon as possible before all of these positions fill up is essential!

Be sure to do your research to have everything ready when it comes time to apply. Depending on which position you're interested in applying for, special certifications might be required, for instance, a lifeguarding certification or CPR training (which can often be obtained through Red Cross classes). You can also check out job boards such as Kibbi to see lists of seasonal positions from employers actively hiring right now!

Volunteering opportunities for students

In addition to paid jobs, volunteering is another great way for students to gain valuable experience while building their resumes and university applications. Whether it's helping out at a non-profit organization or providing assistance at local events such as festivals or street fairs, volunteering allows students to learn new skills while making connections with other professionals in their community. Plus, with so many organizations offering virtual volunteer opportunities these days due to Covid-19 organizational restructuring, it's easier than ever before for students from all over the world to get involved with causes they're passionate about - no matter where they live!

So if you're looking for ways to make extra money this summer while giving back, consider checking out some of these fantastic volunteer opportunities today!
